B. Getting Started

1. Enter:  arcview

 A base window will open.

2. Select the File menu and the Open Project option.



 A second window will open which will list the contents of your
root directory.

Search for the ESRI directory and a project subdirectory.

3. Select the projects directory and then click ok.

The project directory will open and four files will be listed.

4. Select the usa.apr file and click ok.

    ArcView "Project" files have the suffix "apr."

 

 

 



C. The ArcView Windows

 If the map does not open, double-click on the Views icon.

1. Turn various Themes off and on by clicking on the small boxes
to the left of the Theme names in the Table of Contents window.
To
the right that all visible Themes have check marks in the small boxes.
Note also that the highlighted rectangle around the US States Theme means
it is active. 

2.  Each ArcView window has buttons at the top corners and a scroll
bar on the right side.  Pushing the larger square in the upper right
fills the entire screen with the window, or if at normal size, will reduce
the window.  The ìxî button in the upper right corner of a window
will give you the option of closing the window. Use this button to close
a window you no longer want.  You can also enlarge or reduce any window
by dragging any of its  corners. Note that you can have several windows
of the same map showing different areas at different scales.

 

 

 

 

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 To the right is the right half of the Icon bar for the View window. 
A number of the functions deal with zooming
and panning.  Zoom to View brings the entire map into the window. 

Zoom to Theme fits the window to the extent of a selected theme. 
Zoom to Selected fits the extent of a selected subset in the window.

 

3. Click on several of the zoom icons to note their effect on the
display

 Study the various icons above.

 

 

 

 

 To the right are the remaining icons of the View window menu. 
Note in particular the Properties, Legend Editor, and Open Theme
Table
icons. 

 

 Most of the icons are also available as options under various
menus.  Some  of the options can be invoked with keystroke combinations
such as "control" Q or "control" P.

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

4.  Click on the area just to the right of the words in the
US Counties Theme in the Table of Contents window.




 A light colored rectangle will surround the Theme.  Only
selected Themes can be edited.

5. Use the Zoom In tool to drag a rectangle over California and other
southwestern states.






The window will zoom in to the southwest and the counties will appear.
ArcView themes can be set to appear only at certain map scales. In this
case counties will only appear once a certain scale threshhold is crossed.

6. Turn off the Cities and States layers by clicking on the small
box in the Legend.


 

7. Make sure the Identify icon in the Tools window
is selected.
 


Move the now changed cursor to Los Angeles County shown below and
click on  it.

 

 

 A window of Attributes for the U.S. Counties Theme will appear
as shown right. Los Angeles County and others have a number of Attributes.

 Try clicking on other counties.

 Remember to close the windows by clicking on the small square
in the upper corner.

 





D. Selecting Objects


 

1. Click on the Select objects within a shapeicon.  Click
and drag a square over the counties as shown at right. 


 



 

 How do the counties change?

 

 

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 All counties whose centroids fell within the selection rectangle
are chosen.

 

 

 

 

2.  Select the Open Theme Table icon.


 A spreadsheet will appear with rows highlighted as shown right.
You may have to scroll down a few rows to find selected counties Note the
highlighted rows correspond to the buildings selected in the map.



 

 

 

 You can add to the current subset by holding the shift key and
clicking on non-highlighted records.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

 

 Note there are now new icons near the top of the window. These
are for working with tables.



 The Join Table icon lets you join other tables to an existing
one.

 The Summarize Table option creates a new table of all or
a selected subset of attributes. It will provide counts and summary statistics
of the results.

 The Calculate Function will generate a mathematical function
of all or a subset of an Attribute.  One field can be joined to another
(ie First name + Last name) or multiplied by another (ie Rate * Value).

 The Sort buttons will sort the table on a selected attribute.

E. Measurements

1. Select the View window and the Measure Line Lengthicon
from the Tools window.


2. To start a line, click at some road intersection and then click
at various points along the road.

 The length will be displayed in the map window.  To end the
line, double-click at the last point.




 

3. Click on the Clear Selectionicon so no counties appear

F. Queries from Logical Expressions

1. Select the Query Builder Tool (hammer)



 

 The menu shown right will appear.



 

Using this menu you can subset a selected Theme according to various
Attributes.  Note the currently highlighted options appear in the
Logical   Expression window.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2. Double-click on the Field, ìMedian_Valî

3. Select the "=" sign and then, double-click on the Value, "70000". 
Then select the New Set Button.

G. Labeling on the Map

 Make sure the U.S. Counties Theme is active.

You can label counties with an Attribute.

1. Select the Theme menu.  The Theme Properties window (below)
appears.


 Note there are other Theme Properties (icons) which may be set
from this window.  The Definition window (shown) allows you
to select a subset of features from the selected Theme for display. The
Text Labelsicon  sets the position of a label near a symbol
and determines what attribute will be used for labeling.  The Geocodingicon
is used to locate new features on an existing map. (eg address matching)
The Hot Link icon can generate a symbol which, when selected, will
cause another window (often a picture) to appear.


 

2. Select the Theme menu and the Properties... option.  Select
the Text Label icon. Then select an Attribute such as "Name" for display.

3. Return to the main menu and select the Autolabel option under
the Theme menu.

 All currently selected counties with non-overlapping names will
be identified

 

4.  If you want to remove the names select the Edit menu and
the Select All Graphics option. Then select the Cut Graphics option.

Note you may also select the Label icon and click on individual buildings
to identify them.

 5. Select the Text icon and click below the map in the View
window.  Enter your name.








H. Changing Colors on the Map

1. Select  the Edit Legend option from the Theme menu.


 

A number of important changes can be made  from the Legend Editor
window. (below)  By clicking in the Labelcolumn, you can change
a class identifier. (ie The range of numbers might be changed to ìVery
Lowî). If one of the Valuecells is selected, you can change the
number and ranges of class intervals.  The Classify window
allows you to select one of several data classing methods.

A continuous set of data values has been selected and represented with
Graduated Color classing type. Note that a graded color sequence may be
selected for the classes from a list at the bottom of the window. A ramp
may be established by selecting a color for the end classes and then selecting
the last button on the right above the Color Ramps window. The sequence
may be reversed by clicking on adjacent buttons.

2. Press the Apply button to see how your changes appear on the map. 
If you don't like the result, press Revert.


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

1. To change the color of an individual box place the cursor over
the colored box in the legend area and double-click the mouse on 
it.

The window shown above will appear.  You can select a new color
from the palette.  If none of the provided set is acceptable, you
may select the Custom option and another window will open. Adjust the Hue,
Saturation, and Value scales to get the color you desire.

 Note that color may be specified with a Foreground, Background,
and Outline option. Selecting Outline colors only the outline of a polygon.
Selecting Background allows for coloring the background different from
the outline color.

2. Select a color and click OK.

Then select Apply from the Properties menu.

3. Note that other graphic qualities may be changed from this menu.
By clicking on the ABC icon, for example, you may alter the font used for
printing. To the left of the font icon, selecting the stick pin icon, allows
you to change the type of point symbols plotted on the map.

This concludes a basic introduction to ArcView.  If you wish to
save your work to this point as a new View, select the Filemenu and the
Save Project option.
