The CSU, SSRIC Social Science Student Symposium
(formerly the CSU, SSRIC Student Research Conference)

Thursday, May 5, 2016 at San Diego State

The CSU, SSRIC Social Science Student Symposium (S4, pronounced "ess four") is modeled on professional conferences in the social sciences. The Council invites all undergraduates and graduate students, from all CSU campuses and California community colleges, in all areas of the social sciences, to present their research to their peers. Research that involves human or animal subjects must have appropriate institutional review.

REGISTRATION AND PAPER SUBMISSION DEADLINE:  The deadline for registering is now closed.

Individual and group papers are welcome.  Participants will make oral presentations of about 15 minutes in length. Lunch will be provided to participants.

The atmosphere of the Symposium is relaxed, and the emphasis is on meeting and sharing with students with similar interests from throughout the CSU. Dress should be dressy casual.

AWARDS: Thanks to the continued generosity of Dr. Gene Geisler, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at San Francisco State and a key founding member of the SSRIC, the 2016 Symposium will include three $5,000 best paper awards, as well as awards of $75-$150 for other papers presented. Eligibility for awards is limited to CSU undergraduates and Master's level graduate students, and students in the first two full years of a CSU doctoral program.

Before you register, read the attached PDF file of Frequently Asked Questions very carefully. If the Adobe Reader PDF viewer is not already installed on your device, you'll need the free download.

To be considered for a best paper award, you must register for the Symposium and submit your full paper with your registration. Papers may not exceed 20 pages in length, not including, references, graphs, tables, or appendices. In addition, include an abstract of not more than 100 words.

If you are not interested in being considered for an award, but would like to make an oral presentation at the Symposium, register for the Symposium and post an abstract of not more than 100 words with your registration.

The Symposium will be held on the San Diego State campus (see map and directions on menu to the left). SDSU is on the Interstate 8 freeway and the green trolley line runs to the campus.  As to lodging, we recommend you stay close by in the Mission Valley area.  It is a close drive to SDSU and the green trolley line runs along it. If arriving by car, park in Parking Structure 6, Level 6 (Faculty/Staff spaces only). No permit required..Check in at the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union, Templo Mayor (Room 231). Windows-based computers with PowerPoint and projection units will be available in presentation rooms. To avoid problems in loading presentations, bring your PowerPoint file on a CD or flash drive. Be sure to let Ms. Shoulders know if you have any additional needs.

Special note to guests. There is no cost associated with the conference because we have funding from the Chancellors Office.  The funding is fairly limited so, while guests are welcome to attend, we would ask that you not take part in the food that we will offer participants in the morning and at lunch.  We are sorry to not be able to include you in our meals.  You do not need to register or have a badge. We will be in the Student Union for most of the day and also very close to our East Commons.  Here are some of the food options for you: http://www.eatatsdsu.com/HoursLocations/RestaurantsandMarkets.aspx
