contains individual weights for each person and housing unit

which, when applied to the individual records, expand the sample to the

total population.  These weights were included in the SPSS code that
was

used to make the system files, so the user does not need to do anything

else with weights.  See the discussion of the file format below for
more

 information.

 Both the
5% and 1% samples have the same subject content and vary only

in geographic composition of the Public Use Microdata Area (PUMA).

 Items on
the Housing record include:

 Allocation
flags for housing items

Bedrooms, rooms, kitchen and plumbing facilities

 Condominium status

 Contract rent

Cost of utilities, fuels, and house heating fuel used

 Sewage disposal

 Source of water

 State (of residence)

 Telephone in housing unit

Work status in 1989, weeks worked in 1989, and work limitation status

 DATA:
Data are stored in SPSS system files.

 In the files
of Person Records with Housing Variables included,

the household-level and person-level records have been linked

together in the SPSS system file so that the user does not have to

work with the hierarchical file structure.  The file can be used

in the same way as any file with only one record-type.  Use this

file if you want to get information about person variables and

housing variables, or about person variables only.  In this file,

the person-level weighting factor has been included in the system

 file.

 In the files
of Housing Records only, the household-level weighting

factor has been included already.  Use this file if you want to get

 information about housing variables only.

 WARNING:
Nov. 30, 1993.  An alert has been issued for errors in the data.

           Four variables
related to migration and place of work may have

           incorrect data:
POWSTATE, POWPUMA, MIGSTATE, MIGPUMA.  The Census

           Bureau is currently
working on a correction for this problem.

 STUDY DESCRIPTION:
This collection contains individual-level and

household-level data for both the State and National level (PUMS)

from the 1980 Census of Population and Ho sing, conducted by the

Census Bureau.  Data items in this collection include the individual

responses to the basic social, demographic, and economic questions

asked of the population in the 1980 Census of Population and Housing.

 The household-level
and individual-level records have been linked

together in the SPSS system file so that the user does not have to

work with the hierarchical file structure.  The file can be used

in the same way as any file with only one record-type.

 The collection
comprises of two different Samples. Sample A includes

the 5% State Public Use Samples. Sample B includes the Entire U.S.

 Public Use 1-in-1000 Sample.
